Journalism 12 - Mass Media and Society
FALL 2014
Media Use
Survey
This exercise is designed to create self-awareness of your
personal media consumption choices and patterns. Please complete the attached survey
grid as accurately and completely as you can.
Directions:
1. Choose three days during the next week during which you
will record ALL of your media usage, that includes time spent researching on
the Internet for work, reading textbooks for school, listening to the radio, zoning
out to your iPod, consulting a cookbook for dinner, e-mailing/FaceBooking friends,
etc. All time that you spend engaged with any of the eight major mass media
should be recorded. Be sure to compile your data at the end of each day so it’s
fresh in your mind.
2. Record the days and dates that your track your usage.
3. Record the number of hours spent each day with each
medium.
4. Write down the details of your consumption in the details
section: what show, book, program, magazine did you watch/read/hear/flip
through? If you read the paper, did you read the news, sports, comics? If you
watched TV, did you watch the news or a home decorating show or sports? Maybe
all three? If you were on the Internet, what sites did you visit? Provide as
many details as you can. More detail is better. Do not just put book, movie and
radio. Name the book, identify the movie and provide the station call letters.
Provide specific details.
5. If you need more room, attach additional paper.
6. Also, keep track during those three days of how many text
messages you send. Every text! Just record the number on the bottom of your
grid page.
